Wendy & Peter Pan by Ella Hickson

Produced by Brigham Young University

Wendy and Peter Pan is a feminist retelling of the Peter Pan story. It follows a grieving Wendy as she follows Peter into Neverland in search for the soul of a brother who passed in order to bring him back home. As the story progresses, Wendy is faced with the ideas of growing up, of grieving, and what it means to be a woman in her world while meeting a vibrant cast of fellow lost souls.

COVID-19 Disclaimer

Below are photos of the various stages of the costumes. The top photos were taken professionally on the set as a means to provide portfolio pictures for the student designers. The selected costumes were brought as close as possible to being finished and not all costumes were pictured. The rest were taken during what we referred to as a "costume parade", an opportunity for the director to see everything together well before tech begins so changes may be made. You will see lots of safety pins and sticky notes in those photos, but they show the direction of the design and how the different groups coordinated.

The Concept

Characterization through costuming was very important in this production. I wanted to portray the two worlds in a way that would show their juxtaposition. London was muted in color palette and kept period accurate. Neverland was full of color and bent the rules of time and location. Each lost boy was meant to represent a soul taken from a different era, and their costumes were filled with eclectic collections, including personalized items from the actor’s own childhood.
